The Issue

I started Runnymede Folk Club in Surrey back in 2023, and since then I've seen first-hand just how important programmes like Tim Walker's Folk on BBC Radio Lincolnshire are to the wider UK folk music scene.

Running a small folk club can be challenging, particularly when it comes to promoting the wonderful artists who perform for us. Tim has been a great supporter of what we're trying to achieve, regularly giving our gigs and artists a mention on his show. That sort of support makes a real difference to grassroots venues like ours.

The passion that Tim has for folk music and the people involved in it is clear. He genuinely cares about giving artists a platform and helping the folk music community grow.

Although the programme is broadcast on BBC Radio Lincolnshire, its reach and importance extend far beyond the county. With so many dedicated folk programmes having disappeared from BBC radio in recent years, those three hours every Sunday evening have become something rather special for listeners, musicians and promoters across the country.

Losing the programme would be a real shame, not just for Tim, but for the many artists, folk clubs, festivals and listeners who benefit from it. At a time when grassroots music venues are facing increasing challenges, we should be doing more to support programmes like this, not losing them.

Folk music has a wonderful way of bringing people together, and that's exactly what Tim  has been doing every Sunday evening.

I appreciate that the BBC faces difficult financial decisions, but I hope it will reconsider this one.

I simply don't think we should let such an important part of our folk music community disappear without at least trying to save it.

Best wishes

Colin
