Save the wooden benches of the Brussels-North railway station
The Issue

The beautiful wooden benches in Brussels-North railway station have been removed and replaced by individual metal seats. The news caused a storm of protest. The benches must not disappear!
With the action group Sauvez nos Bancs / Red onze Banken, we want to convince SNCB to put the benches back and preserve the ones that are still there.
On 7 November, we held a symbolic parade, bringing a wooden bench back to the North Station. This was featured in the national late evening news.
The SNCB management informed us the same day that they will replace all the wooden benches anyway. They also admitted that they removed the benches because people were sleeping on them. It is also a savings exercise: it is cheaper if all stations have the same metal seats.
Our action resulted in a new wave of expressions of support. Therefore, we are continuing our protest!
Soon we will submit an application to protect the North Station. We have collected the necessary 150 signatures from Brussels residents for this purpose. The Brussels government will then be obliged to discuss the application for protection.
We have now also started an online petition. Because many people have asked for this. We hope this will show how widely supported the protest is.

Les magnifiques bancs en bois de la Gare du Nord à Bruxelles ont été retirés et remplacés par des sièges individuels en métal. La nouvelle a suscité une tempête de protestations. Les bancs ne doivent pas disparaître !
Avec le groupe d’action Sauvez nos Bancs / Red onze Banken, nous voulons convaincre la SNCB de remettre les bancs et de préserver ceux qui sont encore en place.
Le 7 novembre dernier, nous avons organisé un cortège symbolique, où nous avons ramené un banc en bois à la Gare du Nord. Cette action a été amplement relayée dans pa presse nationale et régionale, et notamment au journal télévisé de la VRT.
À l’issue du cortège, la direction de la SNCB nous a dit qu'elle allait poursuivre le démantèlement des bancs en bois. Elle a également avoué qu'ils avaient été retirés parce que des gens dormaient dessus. En plus de l’argument économique : il est moins coûteux d’installer les mêmes sièges en métal dans toutes les gares.
Notre action a suscité une nouvelle vague de soutiens. Par conséquent, nous poursuivons notre combat !
Nous soumettrons bientôt une demande de classement de la Gare du Nord. Nous avons recueilli à cette fin les 150 signatures nécessaires auprès des citoyens bruxellois. Le gouvernement régional sera dès lors alors obligé de traiter notre demande de classement.
Et voici également notre pétition en ligne. Nous l’avons lancée à la demande générale. Nous espérons qu’elle montrera le large soutien dont bénéficie notre action.

De mooie houten banken in het treinstation Brussel-Noord zijn weggehaald en vervangen door individuele metalen zitjes. Het nieuws zorgde voor een storm van protest. De banken mogen niet verdwijnen!
Met de actiegroep Sauvez nos Bancs / Red onze Banken willen we de NMBS overtuigen om de banken terug te plaatsen en de nog aanwezige banken te bewaren.
Op 7 november hielden we een symbolische optocht, waarbij we een houten bank terugbrachten naar het Noordstation. Deze was te zien in het vrt-journaal.
De NMBS-directie heeft ons op die dag gezegd dat ze de houten banken toch allemaal zullen vervangen. Ze hebben ook toegegeven dat ze de banken hebben weggehaald omdat er mensen op sliepen. Het is ook een besparingsoperatie: het is goedkoper als in alle stations dezelfde metalen zitjes staan.
Onze actie bracht een nieuwe golf van steunbetuigingen. Daarom zetten we ons protest verder!
Binnenkort dienen we een aanvraag in voor bescherming van het Noordstation. We hebben daarvoor de nodige 150 handtekeningen van Brusselaars verzameld. De Brusselse regering is dan verplicht de aanvraag tot bescherming te bespreken.
We zijn nu ook een online petitie gestart. Omdat veel mensen hiernaar gevraagd hebben. We hopen zo te kunnen tonen hoe breed het protest gedragen wordt.
