The last time Great Lakes wolves lost protection, more than 200 wolves in Wisconsin were killed in just three days.
Now a U.S. senator is threatening wolves in the region with a new bill to weaken their protection. The Center for Biological Diversity will be ready to fight for them.
The Endangered Species Act is clear: Protections for species must be decided based on science — not the whim of federal agencies or politicians.
But Sen. Tammy Baldwin wants to sidestep the Act and force wolves in Minnesota and Wisconsin to lose some of their protection, which would make it easier for them to be killed.
It's the last thing these wolves need. They're still recovering and desperately need to be protected from trophy hunters, not made more vulnerable.
Politicians eager to appease hunters have gone after wolves in the Great Lakes region before. Wolves lost their federal protection more than a decade ago and then again in 2020. The Center helped restore that protection and prevent future hunts.
Gray wolves in the lower 48 states were once nearly eradicated. Sadly, the forces that went after wolves so thoroughly still linger — and still keep wolves in the crosshairs.
