SAVE the Welsh Economy: ABOLISH the Council Tax Premium

Wales is a beautiful country whose economy is heavily reliant on the tourist industry. But this economy is being seriously endangered by short-sighted policies of the Senedd and some local authorities.

These policies include the introduction of a punitive Council tax premium payable by second home owners of up to 300% and the requirement for second home owners to achieve a minimum of 182 nightly lettings in each year in order to claim relief from that tax premium (widely considered to be impossible to achieve generally as the holiday period in Wales is not sufficiently long). In addition, a nightly tourist tax on visitors to Wales is likely to be introduced soon.

These measures will result in less tourist accommodation being available in Wales and fewer visitors. They give the distinct impression that Wales neither welcomes nor values visitors and their investment in its economy. A huge number of businesses in Wales, and local residents, rely on tourists for income. Any reduction in tourist and visitor numbers will damage the local economy, possibly irrevocably.

Second home owners get no credit for the considerable contribution which they, their families and friends make to the Welsh economy every year. Despite their commitment to the local community, they do not use many of its services such as schools, doctors, dentists and care for the elderly.

The very damaging Council tax premium, minimum nightly letting requirement and possible nightly tourist tax must be abolished before it is too late.

Please help us support the country we love and help its local businesses and tourist attractions to survive by signing this petition.

Encourage the politicians to see sense, please spread the word.
