The Issue

I am a pensioner enjoying the ability to look after myself fairly well, but the thought of staying silent while others face a future of hardship is unthinkable. The UK's Triple Lock is under threat of removal by the Labour Government in 2030, a decision fraught with devastating consequences for current and future pensioners across our nation. For many, this isn't just a fiscal policy—it's a lifeline that ensures dignity and survival in one's later years.

The Triple Lock currently guarantees that the State Pension increases each year by the highest of inflation, average earnings, or a minimum of 2.5%. By removing this guarantee, the risk is real that pensioners will see their incomes stagnate or diminish, unable to keep pace with the rising cost of living. For some, this will result in choosing between heating their homes or having a hot meal, sparking a spiral into poverty that could have dire effects on health and wellbeing.

Statistically, the UK already sees 2.1 million pensioners living in poverty according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Further dismantling of the Triple Lock could swell these numbers significantly by 2030, leaving even more elderly citizens in financial precariousness. The government must recognize the moral obligation to support those who have worked hard throughout their lives and contributed significantly to our society's development.

Abolishing the Triple Lock might seem a way to save money in state budgets, but the cost will be borne by our senior citizens—some of the most vulnerable members of our society. We need a fair and sustainable approach to pension adjustments that will not disadvantage elder individuals who rely deeply on these funds for basic needs and for maintaining a dignified standard of living.

I urge the government to reconsider and preserve the Triple Lock policy. This is not merely a political issue; it is about people's lives and their right to age with dignity and security. Your signature on this petition will send a powerful message to our leaders that the welfare of our elderly should never be reduced to mere numbers and policies devoid of compassion.

Please join me in advocating for our pensioners' future and sign this petition to ensure that they live in comfort and dignity for years to come.
