The Issue

The beloved train display at the Longmont Library is due to be demolished mid-May. This decision has been made unilaterally by the library without any input from the community.

For the past 30 years, this charming display has been more than just entertainment; it has been a staple of early childhood memories and discovery. We have all watched our children eagerly pressed the start button, igniting not only the movement of the train but also their imaginations. This seemingly simple act sparks joy and curiosity, making it a vital part of our community.

This exhibit also serves an educational role as it encourages language development and communication for young children. It teaches important turn-taking skills in a unique environment as children wait their turn to press the button. Gathering around the model train, children and families engage in conversations about the features within. These interactions not only strengthen developing language skills, they also help families form special memories.

While renovations and progress are necessary, preserving elements of our community's shared history and cherished memories should not be overlooked. Removing this exhibit would erase a part of what makes the Longmont library a special place for children and families.

By signing this petition, you join countless others who believe in the importance of preserving the cultural and educational assets of Longmont. Let's come together to encourage the board to rethink the renovation plans and retain the original train display.
