Save the Tenakill Swim Club

The Issue

To Mayor Mark Zinna and the Borough of Tenafly Council,

The Tenakill Swim Club has been a cherished, member-supported pool in Tenafly, New Jersey for generations. Due to an unfortunate series of circumstances, the pool now faces permanent closure. We are calling on the Borough of Tenafly to aid in preventing Tenakill from closing by helping transform it into a municipal pool.

For 61 years, the Tenakill Swim Club (TSC) has served an important role for area families. Generations of Tenafly children have learned the essential life skill of swimming at TSC. Many have gone on to have their first jobs at the club including taking on important leadership roles by serving as lifeguards, swim instructors, team coaches, and serving in various managerial administrative positions. TSC has sustained the Tenafly Recreation Department’s "Reckys" Summer Camp for many years. The club has provided an essential meeting ground for adults and our town senior citizens, who have come to depend upon having a summer, outdoor pool. If Tenakill were to close permanently, it would be the second pool to have failed in Tenafly while nearby municipally supported pools such as Cresskill have thrived.

As we look to revitalize Tenafly, a municipal pool would be a significant asset in the town’s recreational portfolio. The community-building, well being, and health sustaining properties of a pool that is affordable for all town residents, and offered at a competitive price to non-residents, cannot be understated. We call upon you as our elected local representatives to help transform Tenakill into a municipal pool so that current and future generations of Tenafly families can thrive, flourish, and benefit from the many important opportunities that a community pool can offer.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Friends of Tenakill Swim Club
