Trump just threatened to remove 988 from existence. For the 12.8 million people who “seriously thought about suicide” in 2023, this could be fatal. Suicide rates increased 37% between 2000 and 2018, and since the pandemic, there has been a 25% increase in anxiety and depression worldwide.

The lack of 988 especially affects young people like myself. The suicide rates for teens have nearly doubled since 2006, and social media is also hurting many, as 25% of teens have said it’s made their mental health poorer in a recent survey. Americans need a hotline to call in case there aren’t any other forms of support available to them.
