The Issue

For many parents in Suffolk, the support that comes from having access to Staff Nurses within Health Visiting Teams is not just a benefit; it's a lifeline. As a close family member of one of those fantastic staff nurses, I know that she is tirelessly dedicated to her work and committed to doing the best for the families she serves. Losing her extensive knowledge and experience, alongside that of her colleagues, would be impossible to replace or replicate.

Currently, the Suffolk County Council is considering cuts to the community Staff Nurse service, which will have a devastating impact on countless families across the region. These nurses play a critical role in supporting parents and young children, providing essential health advice, conducting developmental assessments, and ensuring the well-being of the most vulnerable members of our community. Their work spans across mental health support, nutrition advice, and early intervention strategies, all of which are crucial in fostering the healthy development of children.

In addition cutting such a vital service for short term cost savings with Local Area Reorganisation coming up next year means that once lost, these services would take extensive time, resources and much more money from council budgets.  It is a short sighted approach to local services. Equally cutting community nursing removes early intervention and support for health and wellbeing and simply passes the cost up the line to social services, NHS teams and schools.

Statistics show that communities with strong Health Visiting Teams that include trained Staff Nurses have better early childhood outcomes, healthier children , and more confident parents.  Removing these positions would diminish the quality of care and support that Suffolk families deserve.  For a highly rural area like Suffolk visiting Nursing services enable that people who would otherwise be isolated from, or struggle to access healthcare services.  This is especially important for disabled parents and parents of children with complex health needs.

We are calling on Suffolk County Council to look into the real value of these key positions and reconsider their proposals.  Lets explore other viable solutions that do not compromise the future of our families by eradicating these essential services.

By signing this petition you are showing that you stand in solidarity with our nurses, and show Suffolk County Council that Suffolk residents are willing to fight for the services they need and deserve.
