The Desert Vista Speech and Debate team is an 18 time division 1 state champion here in Arizona. Our head coach, Brittany Stanchik, has been a part of the Thunder Speech, Theater, and Debate Company (TSTDC) for about 17 years now. On Mar 22, 2022, all of us members of the team found out Brittany had to resign due to loss of support from administration here at Desert Vista. For example, the Desert Vista football team has loads of funding and support from the school, yet they have only won 2 state championships compared to our 18.

The principal, assistant principal of academics, and the assistant principal of activities has denied our team a seventh and eighth period class for the 2022-2023 school year. The classes have been going on for the past three years. Every year, Brittany has to give administration an ultimatum to allow her to have these classes which are critical for the engagement and ease of the program.

I, Alyssa Hattula, took part in that class this year. I am enrolled in the seventh hour class and found it necessary for my success in the program. It gives time inside of school hours to learn the basics and advance in the forensics program. This year my partner and I got 3rd place at the Division 1 State championship in duet acting as freshman. We prepped, prepared, and practiced all of our pieces during that period which I believe led us to the place we got.

There has been plenty of examples of people on the team making it to the final round of tournaments who are also enrolled in that seventh hour. The team/club and the class go hand in hand with each other. Please support so our program isn’t pushed over by administration.
