"You win or you learn. And if you learn, it's tuition for the future. You've paid for education." - Dr. Phil
Well folks, indeed there was a valuable lesson to be taught today...
I encourage you to purchase nostalgic and rare properties in your neighborhood that mean something to you before developers get a hold of them, because they are hungry to grab 'em up in our ever-escalating Colorado real estate. Get involved with your County's programs so that you have a beat on what's going on within your community and therefore can give a voice to the issues that concern you. And, take a close look at the members sitting on your County's board of commissioners. Make sure their values reflect what's truly important to your and your family, and that their vision for your neighborhood matches your best interest. These individuals are elected officials, so please remember that we put them in the position of power to make these kinds of decisions.
Unfortunately, today (March 2nd) the Board of County Commissioners voted to approve the demolition and rezoning of 7996 & 8000 north Pecos. Our beloved "spaceship house" will be coming down in the near future. :'(
We tried very hard to persuade the County to side with the residents, submitting tons of material for close to a year now ever since the project's application was first submitted. I attended every meeting and made sure to the best of my ability that I reflected the resident's voices and opinions that were expressed to me throughout the duration.
In both the Planning Commission meeting and also the Board of County Commissioners hearing, there were board members who were adamantly against this being approved. So, our concerns and oppositions were at least heard and seemingly truly considered. Sadly, it wasn't enough to convince all of them to deny the application.
I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for supporting this cause. It was an important one to me, and there's not enough words to express my gratitude to you for signing the petition I created, for sharing it time and time again, and for putting up with me when I repeatedly asked for your help during the material submissions and neighborhood meetings!
I'm not sure when the demolition will begin now that the project has been green-lit. I do know that Delwest wants to do it as soon as they can. IF YOU HAVE A CONNECTION WITH THIS BUILDING, I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO DRIVE PAST IT ONE LAST TIME AND GO TAKE PICTURES OF IT FROM THE PARK WHILE YOU STILL CAN BEFORE THE CONSTRUCTION FENCES GO UP.
It's not all bad news, though! Throughout all of my research and community outreach that I've done on behalf of this case, I was able to get eyes on the original blueprints of the building!! As many of you may know, I've been searching for a facility to operate my company out of. In fact, that's what drew my interest to this case in the first place - I was trying to obtain it as a "headquarters", if you will.
I know that a replica could never take it's place, as it's got it's very own special set of memories belonging to it's former students, teachers, and generations of commuters and folks living in the area. However keep your eye out... the "spaceship" may just come back to Earth in another location! ^_^
But for now, as I figure it, it's taking off back to space to get repaired before it comes back to serve the purposes we would have liked to use it for.
I'll be turning the Facebook group "Save the 'Spaceship House' from Demolition" into a memorial site, so if you do go take any photographs, please share them with this page and also invite your friends and family to join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/299594594550148
I can't believe this petition received over 2,100 signatures!! Great job, everybody!!! Your assistance and your comments will stay with me personally long after this case has been over.
Thank you once more. <3
