The Issue

Issue: The Ahunan Pumped-Storage Hydropower Project is a proposed 1,400 MW facility in Pakil, Laguna, led by Ahunan Power Inc., that would use an upper reservoir and Laguna de Bay as its lower basin to store and supply large-scale renewable energy. Aiming for completion in early 2027, it promises grid stability and backup power but has sparked strong local concern over possible flooding, deforestation, and the displacement of farmers and families. Community protests reflect worries about impacts on water sources, livelihoods, and the landscape — making the project as much a social environment debate as an energy one.

Negative Effects: Over 300 hectares of Sierra Madre rainforest would face deforestation, endangering protected species like the Ibuli tree, wildlife, and watersheds feeding Laguna de Bay fisheries. Risks include heightened landslides, earthquakes, flooding, and disruption to natural springs and streams in a typhoon-prone area.

Petition: We, the concerned citizens and defenders of the environment, urge you to cancel the Ahunan Pumped-Storage Hydropower Project. We demand the protection of our forests and the preservation of our natural watersheds. Development should not come at the expense of our safety and our environment. We call for a permanent halt to all tree-cutting and construction activities on Mount Ping-as and the surrounding Sierra Madre range.

Possible Effects: Through this petition, natural water sources and nearby ecosystems would be preserved, helping protect local livelihoods, wildlife, and cultural heritage connected to Laguna de bay. However, possible benefits such as improved water management or energy development would not be achieved.
