Save the Shirehall from demolition

The Issue

The Shirehall is the most important 20th Century building in Shropshire and should be saved from demolition.

Shropshire Council propose to relocate, dispose of the site and allow its redevelopment.

In 2020, the council narrowly secured a Certificate of Immunity from Listing. This means that the site cannot be listed for 5 years from receiving the certificate. This does not mean the building does not have heritage value but does mean it is at risk of demolition.

The building is described as “The major monument to post-war Modernism in the county” by John Newman in Pevsner’s Buildings of England (2006.) The Shirehall still has clear and strong heritage value which will only increase over time.

The Shirehall could be creatively adapted for reuse and should not be demolished. This is the right thing to do environmentally, culturally, and economically."
