In an Iron County public meeting on August 13, 2024, the Iron County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted against the millage requested by the Northwoods Animal Shelter (NAS). This was despite NAS providing comprehensive financial documentation to demonstrate the critical need for additional funding. As a deeply impacted member of the community, this decision mars my faith in our system's ability to address the needs of the voiceless.

The Northwoods Animal Shelter is a vital element of our community, offering refuge for countless animals. An adequate funding mechanism is essential for this compassionate cause. Millages have historically supported public facilities, and it remains our firm belief that citizens should have an opportunity to decide whether funds should be allocated to the shelter.

Our collective voices can make a difference. Not allowing the community members to decide on funding an essential community service goes against the principles of fair governance.
