An important update on re-listing the Saracens Head as an Asset of Community Value. If you live in Deal, this one’s for you!

The inevitable has happened. The property developers have submitted a Change of Use application to turn The Saracens into residential.

If we, as a community, do not want to lose this asset, we must act now and submit letters of objection!

Below is a link to the planning application:

https://publicaccess.dover.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=S0Z9IEFZM5D00&activeTab=summary

If you do want to object, just click on the ‘make a comment’ button and fill in your details. It’s quite a straight forward process, and should only take a few minutes.

Key points of objection that would apply, are:

 - loss of a community facility where local people meet and socialise
- loss of a heritage asset in a Conservation Area
- loss of a local business and employment.

The main argument the developer is making is that the business is no longer viable. This is untrue. The problem, unfortunately, is that the pub has been badly run for the last 12 months or so, and was a successful business right up until Covid.

You can also write a letter, but you must include the application reference no. 23/01128 and the address 1 Alfred Square, Deal, CT14 6LS.

There is the statutory 21 days to make a comment, so the deadline is Monday 16th October. Do not delay!

If we all act together, we can try and save The Saracens!

Ian
