Save the Russell Customhouse from disrepair

The issue

The Russell Customhouse holds not only the stories of New Zealand’s bustling port history but is also a significant part of our heritage. Built in 1870, this beautiful relic stands on the waterfront of Russell, bearing witness to the vibrant era when our coastlines thrived with commerce and community. Although the port declined in the 1890s, the Customhouse continued to serve as a cornerstone of the town when it was sold to the NZ Police, becoming Russell's police station until 2010 and a constable's residence until only a few years ago.

Sadly, this symbol of our past is at grave risk of falling into disrepair. Without immediate intervention, we stand to lose a vital piece of our colonial history; a history that not only belongs to the residents of Russell but is also part of New Zealand’s shared national heritage. Today, residents like us care deeply about preserving this landmark for future generations. It holds a special place in our hearts and reflects our collective identity and cultural stories.

Russell’s Customhouse is more than a neglected building; it’s a testament to our thriving maritime past and resilient community spirit. We are campaigning to save and restore this historic building so it can once again be a place where residents and visitors alike will be able to gather, learn, and enjoy its rich eventful narrative. Transforming the Customhouse into a place for community gatherings can revitalize our town's bygone era and offer a fulfilling experience for visitors.

By signing the petition, you are helping us urge the New Zealand Police to allow our not-for-profit trust 'Friends of Russell Customhouse' to be the kaitiaki (guardians) of the property. To motivate the local council and heritage conservation boards to allocate resources and funding necessary to restore the Russell Customhouse, and demand that this Heritage Category 1 property is protected. Our determination is not just about preserving a building; it is about safeguarding a piece of our collective past that can educate and inspire future generations. Join us in our mission to save this irreplaceable icon of New Zealand's past. Your support can make a difference. Please sign this petition today to help us preserve the Russell Customhouse for tomorrow. Let us not allow our history to fade into oblivion when we have the opportunity to save it.
