The Issue

An important African-American Heritage Site is about to be lost forever with the threatened demolition of the former Richmond Community Hospital building.  Ironically, the callous entity who proposes this injustice is itself a Historically Black University, Virginia Union University.

This building was created in the depths of the Great Depression by Richmond Blacks, who held bake sales, dances, and concerts to raise money to fund the construction.  They knew if they were to receive professional health care, they had to build and staff their own hospital outside of the injustice of segregated Richmond.  For generations, Richmond Community Hospital was the embodiment of all of their hopes for the futures of their children and their community, while it provided professional health care in the hands of Black doctors and nurses.  The building personified justice and progress for Richmond Blacks in an era when both were rare in the former Confederate capital.

You have to join us and fight the raging hypocrisy and cynicism of the leadership of Virginia Union and prevent this unique building from being demolished, and you have to do it now.  Join with us and sign this petition. With enough voices, emails, and calls for justice, this building can become a valuable part of the VUU campus, and not just another urban parking lot.  Call them out, and don't let the Richmond Community Hospital, with its honored history and huge potential, disappear under the wheels of VUU's misguided and insensitive administration.
