SAVE THE RHINO: Prosecute traffickers, couriers, purchasers and users of rhinoceros horn to the full extent of your laws.

The issue

Please sign this petition to the honourable Mr Nguyen Tan Dung, Vietnam's Prime Minister and the honourable Mr Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, to prosecute traffickers, purchasers, couriers and users of rhino horn to the full extent of their laws.

The illegal trade in rhinoceros horn is lucrative, with black market prices of whole or ground horns fetching more money than gold. Sophisticated syndicates including organised crime rings and terrorists are involved in the illicit trade which has resulted in dramatically increasing rates of poaching. Since 2007, poaching deaths of rhinos in South Africa have increased by over 5000%! The current rate of killing is threatening wild populations, leading to estimates that the rhinos of South Africa could be extinct by the end of the next decade.

Together with other strategies such as:
- educating the Asian market that rhino horn is made of keratin (just like your fingernails) and has absolutely no medicinal qualities;
- decreasing the perception of rhinoceros horn is a status symbol (it is evidence of a callous, barbaric and inhumane act against a gentle soul);
- supporting organisations who are combating poachers or who care for the orphans left behind from this insidious crime; and
- increasing worldwide community awareness and understanding of the barbaric acts committed against rhinos who are often still alive,
our long term goal is to stop the market for rhino horn altogether.

South Africa is home to approximately 83% of the world's wild populations of rhinos but they could soon become extinct. We must act now to prevent the extinction of these species whilst also enabling current populations to regenerate.

Thank you
