The Coalition to Save the Stoner House filed an appeal that will be heard by the Long Beach Planning Commission this week. We need your support!
In our last update, we shared that Docomomo SoCal has joined with the Los Angeles Conservancy and Long Beach Heritage to form the Coalition to Save the Stoner House, filing an appeal on a City of Long Beach action that approves demolition of Ray Kappe's earliest project (1956) in Long Beach. It is the only example of his work in the community prior to 1975.
Two flawed historic assessment reports were commissioned by the owner that found the property ineligible for listing. The Coalition strongly disagrees with these findings. The property appears to be eligible as historic resource. You can read more about our position here: https://www.laconservancy.org/learn/historic-places/stoner-house/
Our appeal to save the Stoner House will be heard before the Long Beach Planning Commission on:
Date: Thursday, December 18th
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Long Beach City Hall Council Chambers
This meeting is our opportunity to demonstrate overwhelming community support and stop the demolition of this significant piece of architectural history.
How can you help?
- Your voice can influence the Commissioners before they make their decision. Send an e-mail by December 17th to the Planning Commission at PlanningCommissioners@longbeach.gov.
- Copy Liana.Arechiga@longbeach.gov (Long Beach Planning Staff). We also kindly request that you copy hello@docomomo-socal.org.
- Your letter doesn't need to be long. A simple statement about why the house is important to Long Beach's history, architectural legacy, or your personal appreciation for Ray Kappe's work is powerful.
- Copy Liana.Arechiga@longbeach.gov (Long Beach Planning Staff). We also kindly request that you copy hello@docomomo-socal.org.
- Attend the Planning Commission meeting in-person this Thursday. Your presence demonstrates the depth of community commitment.
- Continue to share the petition with your network. Every signature adds weight to our appeal. Over 1,700 people have signed, but we know there are more who will speak up when they hear about this threat.
Thank you for being a champion of preservation! Let's save the Stoner House!
