The Stroke Recovery Service in Portsmouth provided by the Stroke Association and funded by Portsmouth City Council is under threat.

Portsmouth City Council have advised that they are planning to no longer fund the service. This means the service may not be able to continue running from the end of June 2023.

I write this as a user of the service. In September 2022, in my 30s as a busy, fit and healthy mum of 3 I had a stroke caused by a vertebral artery dissection. Something that can happen to anyone, any age and at any time.

Myself and many others have found the service and the wonderful support coordinators to be absolutely invaluable when dealing with the aftermath of a brain injury. The support they provide stroke survivors and their families is so very needed. Many of us are of working age, have young families or seek support while caring for family members who are stroke survivors. The service helps so many. We will be sharing our stories using the tag #portsmouthstrokerecoveryservice

Strokes can happen to anyone, any age and at any time. We hope you will never have to use this service but on behalf of so many stroke survivors and their friends and families, I can not put into words how much this service is needed, both at the start and years into recovery.
