Good evening
In spite of hundreds of signatures and widespread disagreement about demolishing buildings within the Pocahontas school complex, the Powhatan School Board is continuing to press for a permit to tear down these buildings. If you are serious about a better future for this historic site, now is the time to recommit to the cause.
For demolition to occur, the school board must first obtain permission from the Powhatan Planning Commission and then the Board of Supervisors. This Tuesday, September 2, the planners will meet and hold a public hearing on this issue. It's item 6C on the agenda. If you are able to attend and speak on the matter, that will be extremely helpful.
Also, there is still time to reach out to school board members directly. Specifically, Smith, Taylor and Wade are the votes in favor of tearing down these buildings. If even one of them had a change of mind, the demolition might be stopped. Please let your voice be heard.
And do continue to share this petition. The more signatures, the better! We need Powhatan residents, Pocahontas alumni, lovers of history, and historic preservationists to speak up. It's about history and it's about good stewardship of public resources. Speak through the petition and reach out to county leaders directly to make it clear. We want all buildings at Pocahontas preserved, restored and repurposed for the community.
Thank you.
