Who will speak for Pocahontas? The Powhatan County School Board meets tonight, and Pocahontas is on the agenda. The Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously for the school board to transfer ownership of the complex to the county INSTEAD of moving forward with plans to demolish many of the buildings. But so far, the school board has not indicated any intention to veer away from their initial vote-- to destroy the history and future promise represented by these buildings.
Will you speak tonight? The public comment portion of the meeting requires those who wish to speak to sign up before the 6pm meeting start. Will you attend? Will you speak? The more clearly the desire is expressed-- to halt demolition plans, to provide county residents and other stakeholders more information about the state of the buildings, the cost to demolish vs the cost to rehabilitate, to protect and preserve the history of Pocahontas, and to repurpose the entire facility in a way that serves the students within the school division as well as all residents of the county much more appropriately than a torn-down mass or parking lot or expensive new construction might serve anyone-- the more clearly all of this is stated by those who care, the more likely the board will be to hear the request and hopefully, respond by voting to save our school.
Who will speak for Pocahontas? County residents, your voices are needed now. Please attend the meeting at the Pocahontas Landmark Center, sign up before 6pm, and let your voice be heard.
