The Issue

The Parma Heights Library turned 60 this year! Parma Heights was the first municipality in Ohio to pass a bond issue specifically for the construction of a library. The entire process took nearly two years, forged new legal ground in the state, and became the template for other municipalities who wanted libraries in their communities.
People think demolition represents progress. New buildings represent progress. Objectively, we should understand that urban renewal can inflict immeasurable and catastrophic damage. The Parma Heights library is a cultural institution, and some say an architectural masterpieces that should not be wiped away.
There is a difference between a building that speaks to Parma Heights' proud past and one that just sits there for decades or more. The current library could be turned into part museum, part rec/activity center for teens and adults. Demolition is forever. Before a building is torn down for the landfill, the careful evaluation of its historical and cultural value is not only progressive, it is prudent. Please sign the petition to save the Parma Heights Library and make it a Historical site. THANK YOU!!
