On April 24, 2018, Fin Donnelly, NDP Critic for Fisheries, Oceans and Coast Guard also called on the government for an emergency order for the whales. He said in the House of Commons “The situation is critical. We do not have decades to fix the problem. We do not even have years to fix the problem. These whales do not need another study; they need swift and immediate action. A steady decline in chinook salmon, combined with disturbances from vessels, which interferes with the whales' ability to hunt and communicate, has put this iconic species at serious risk of malnutrition and starvation.... The Government has implemented some no fishing zones and may now be increasing boat distances to 200 meters for all cetaceans. This has been due to public pressure. However, an Emergency Order is needed to stop all of the threats!
