Save the Only Fenced Off-Leash Dog Park in the Kootenays!

The Issue

As a proud dog owner and resident of Castlegar, BC, Canada, I am deeply concerned about the potential closure of our beloved fenced off-leash dog park. This petition aims to urge the Castlegar City Council to reject the motion to close the park for relocation (brought forth by one council member) and keep this vital facility open for our community's dog owners and their furry friends. The City Council will decide on this motion and will vote on the next steps on Oct 10th at 7pm (during the regular council meeting under the notice of motion section).

Personal Story:
I have been a resident of Castlegar for over 30 years now, and my four-legged companion has brought immense joy to my life. The fenced off-leash dog park has been an integral part of our routine – a place where we can both socialize, exercise, and bond with other dogs and their owners.

My personal story is just one among many in our community who have benefited from this wonderful facility. Many people travel over 30mins multiple times a week to bring their dogs here. It breaks my heart to see that unfounded claims of conflicts and noise have led nearby homeowners to push for its closure. These homeowners knowingly purchased properties beside a park that was designated as a community facility.

Importance of Dog Parks:
Dog parks play a crucial role in promoting the well-being and happiness of our furry friends. They provide opportunities for socialization with various breeds, sizes, and temperaments – promoting positive interactions while developing essential communication skills among dogs.

Supervised play in controlled environments prevents misunderstandings from escalating into aggression or fights. The energy release and exercise provided by these parks also reduce frustration levels in dogs, leading to better behavior both inside and outside the park.

Early socialization fosters lifelong friendliness in dogs while allowing owners to gain a better understanding of canine behavior. Responsible ownership is key when it comes to maintaining safe and harmonious spaces like dog parks within our community.

Facts & Statistics:
1) According to research conducted by Dr. Megan Mueller at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, regular visits to dog parks have been linked to reduced behavioral problems in dogs, including aggression and separation anxiety.

2) The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recognizes the importance of off-leash areas for dogs, stating that they provide opportunities for exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation – all essential for a dog's overall well-being.

3) A study published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science found that dogs who regularly visit off-leash parks are more likely to exhibit friendly behavior towards unfamiliar dogs and humans.

Conclusion:
The closure or relocation of our only fenced off-leash dog park would be a significant loss for our community. It is essential that we stand together and urge the City Council to prioritize the needs of our furry friends and their owners. Let us remind them that dog parks are not just spaces for recreation but also promote responsible ownership while fostering positive interactions among our beloved pets.

Please sign this petition to help save the only fenced off-leash dog park in the Kootenays! Together, we can ensure that Castlegar remains a welcoming place for both humans and their canine companions.
