Save the Old Bridgewater Bridge!

The issue

The New Bridgewater Bridge opens on the 1st of June 2025. This is intended as a replacement to the old Bridgewater Bridge, which has been in operation for nearly 75 years. The bridge is an important piece of local heritage, spanning the Derwent River.

Closing the bridge will involve ripping up a portion of the South Line, the only railway into Hobart. There will be no replacement. Building a new rail bridge over this gap would be far too expensive to justify it for the next several decades. The Old Bridgewater Bridge should be retained for local traffic between Bridgewater and Granton, and to allow for future reopening of the closed railway into Hobart, the largest city in Tasmania.

We NEED to act now! The state Liberal Government wants to close the bridge to block any chance at a resurgent passenger rail system in Tasmania, therefore further condemning Hobart to more congestion, forcing communities to rely on infrequent, indirect, and unreliable buses. Help save the Old Bridgewater Bridge Now!
