In the Summer of 2017, several Northumberland Strait Striped Bass were observed to have fin rot / fin erosion. These Striped Bass were caught in the Pictou Harbour .
Fin rot is a symptom of disease or the actual disease in fish. This is a disease which is most often observed in aquariums and aquaculture, but can also occur in natural populations. The most common reasons for Fin Rot is poor water quality, bacteria and stress.
While it is hard to pin point the actual cause of fin rot on these specific Striped Bass since testing was not performed on them. It is worth noting that bleach kraft pulp mill effluent can be one cause as per the study performed in Sweden with costal perch https://www.int-res.com/articles/dao/8/d008p119.pdf
The Northumberland Strait is at its threshold for nutrient overloading and pollution. Further pollution in the form of 90,000,000 L a day of toxic effluent that will have dioxins, furans, metals, 1000KG of solids and be 37C fresh water will have a negative impact with years of bioaccumulation.
