The Issue
The imminent closure of the Post Office serving the Northside – Greater Shantallow area is deeply troubling for our community. As a concerned constituent, I can personally attest to the critical role this Post Office plays in our daily lives. It is not merely a place to buy stamps and send parcels; it is a vital social and economic hub for the area.
Every week, approximately 2,000 residents rely on this Post Office for essential services such as pensions, ATM access, insurance services, car tax and MOT transactions, and currency exchange. For many, particularly the elderly and those who are less mobile, it represents an indispensable part of their routine, offering a convenient and accessible place to manage financial and official tasks.
The closure of the Post Office would mean a significant increase in travel time and costs for the residents of Greater Shantallow, particularly affecting those with limited transportation options and financial means. It would strip our community of a crucial institution that supports independence and social cohesion.
We cannot allow this closure to proceed unchecked, as it would disproportionately affect the most vulnerable in our society. The Post Office is an integral part of the social fabric in our community, helping to maintain connections and offering support to those who need it most.
We urge the local authorities and the Post Office management to consider alternative solutions to keep the Northside – Greater Shantallow Post Office open. Potential options could include reducing operating hours or exploring partnerships with local businesses to share operational costs.
By signing this petition, you stand with me and the residents of Greater Shantallow in calling on decision-makers to preserve our Post Office. Together, let's ensure that this vital service remains accessible to all. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and help save our Post Office.
