On 5 May 2026, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) formally communicated concerns to the Government of India regarding the reported impacts of the Great Nicobar Island Project on the Indigenous Shompen tribe under its Early Warning and Urgent Action Procedure.
In its communication, CERD recorded concerns relating to the potential impact of the project on the Shompen tribe's survival, health, traditional territories, natural resources and environment. The Committee also referred to allegations regarding the absence of consultation and free, prior and informed consent of the affected Indigenous community.
CERD has requested the Government of India to provide detailed information and clarify measures being taken to protect the rights of the Indigenous Shompen tribe during India's appearance before the Committee's 118th Session scheduled for August 2026.
