🌊 The Great Nicobar Dilemma: Progress vs. Preservation 🌿
The Government has given the green light to the Great Nicobar Infrastructure Project (GNIP) — a grand vision comprising:
🚢 A transshipment port
✈️ An international airport
🏙️ Township development
⚡ A 450 MVA gas and solar-based power plant
All of this is planned in the ecologically sensitive expanse of Great Nicobar Island (GNI).
✅ The project has received environmental and preliminary forest clearances from the Centre.
⚠️ Yet, rising concerns about biodiversity loss, massive tree-felling, and disruption to indigenous tribes have led the National Green Tribunal to order a review.
“There are local fault lines in the Great Nicobar Island [GNI] as well as changes in land levels prior to a massive earthquake.
This is an extremely geo-dynamic area, and major infrastructure projects here are particularly vulnerable.
It is better to avoid such an area for a port or a container terminal.”

💭 As we race toward development, the question persists:
At what cost?
Can we afford to silence the island’s ancient heartbeat for the echo of cranes and concrete?
🔴 Have we forgotten the 9.2 intensity earthquake that led to the devastating Tsunami of 2004?
It’s high time we rethink the blueprint — not just for growth, but for survival.
Let’s choose sustainable development, not seismic folly.
