Save the Neyland Stadium Skyline
The Issue
Neyland Stadium is more than a football stadium. It is an iconic part of Knoxville’s identity and the entire college sports landscape.
The plans for the new 865 Neyland Entertainment District have now been released, including a proposed 24-story hotel that would rise dramatically above Neyland Stadium.
The renderings make one thing clear: this hotel would become a dominant feature of the Neyland skyline. Instead of looking out across the Tennessee River and seeing the iconic stadium against an open skyline, future views of Neyland could be dominated by a massive building towering above it.
We believe there is a better way.
This petition is not asking the University of Tennessee to abandon the 865 Neyland project. We recognize the potential for new restaurants, entertainment, lodging, and development to benefit the university and the Knoxville community.
We are simply asking for the height and scale of the hotel to be reconsidered.
Neyland Stadium has been a defining landmark of Knoxville for generations. Its location along the Tennessee River is part of what makes it special. Development surrounding the stadium should enhance that setting—not overwhelm it.
A 24-story building rising above Neyland Stadium could permanently change one of college football's most recognizable views.
Our Request:
We respectfully ask the University of Tennessee Athletic Department, the State of Tennessee, and Danny White to:
Reconsider the proposed height of the 865 Neyland hotel and reduce its size so that it does not tower above Neyland Stadium.
We believe it is possible to create an exciting, successful entertainment district while also preserving the iconic character and skyline of Neyland Stadium.
Once this skyline is changed, it cannot be changed back.
If you believe Neyland Stadium deserves to remain the dominant landmark of its surroundings, please sign this petition and ask the University of Tennessee to reconsider the height of the proposed hotel.
Protect the view. Protect the skyline. Protect Neyland.
