The Environment Agency is consulting on an Environmental Permit for the waste incinerator in Swadlincote and we would appreciate it if you would consider making an comment on their consultation.
KEY FACTS:
- Would process 230,000 tonnes of waste yearly
- Just 150m from homes
- Only 3.1km from another incinerator
- In high-risk flood zone
- Next to protected woodland
- Already serious environmental breaches at site
WHY YOUR RESPONSE MATTERS:
The Environment Agency MUST consider public responses on:
✓ Environmental protection
✓ Pollution controls
✓ Technical standards
✓ Impact on local people
✓ Noise and odour
✓ Monitoring requirements
HOW TO RESPOND:
- Visit https://consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/psc/de11-9en-r-p-clean-power-limited/
- Quote site: DE11 9EN, R&P CLEAN POWER LIMITED, EPR/LP3327SK/A001: environmental permit consultation
- Or use our template responses below or on our website: https://traceywond.wixstudio.io/incineratesd/permit
ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS:
□ Site in Flood Zone 3 - existing flood measures never implemented and "cannot be achieved retrospectively" □ Located on Principal Aquifer requiring protection □ No observed assessment of contaminated fire water containment □ Would destroy 5 wildlife sites □ Protected species on site including great crested newts, bats and rare beetles
POLLUTION CONCERNS:
□ Two incinerators within 3.1km is unprecedented □ No cumulative impact assessment with Drakelow □ Area already has some of the highest NO2 readings in district □ No assessment of dioxins impact on nearby dairy farm □ 196 extra HGV movements daily through A444 and villages.
TECHNICAL ISSUES:
□ Operator's own noise assessment shows "significant effects" □ Current smaller facility generates complaints □ Air Quality assessment incomplete □ No adequate odour control plans □ Site too constrained for future carbon capture
The deadline is 13th DECEMBER 2024.
