Save the Mystic River - take away CSOs!

The Issue

Dear People of the Mystic River Watershed,

The students of Fayerweather Street School urge the mayors of these cities* to separate CSO pipes (Combined Sewer Overflow). If you don’t know what CSO’s are, here is an explanation: When heavy amounts of water enter the sewer pipes and combine with the sewage, it becomes too much for the pipes. Then, to prevent the pipes from backing up and toilets from overflowing, the pipes have a hole that dumps some of the sewer-water into the river, polluting the water and endangering organisms that live in it.

This can be bad for humans as well because:

     1. The sewage pollutes the air which makes it bad to be near the river
     2. If you live near the river your basement will fill with sewage!
     3. The sewage makes people sick

We must separate the CSO pipes so that all the sewage goes to a treatment center and only the rainwater will go to the river. This will make our watershed healthier and safer for our community before all of the organisms die and it becomes too late.

Sign this petition to help convince our mayors to separate the CSOs and change them into separated sewer pipes.

Thank you for your support!
