🖌️ Protect the Mural at 103 1st Ave S: Defend Public Art and Creative Freedom in Conover, NC

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Conover to allow the mural located at 103 1st Ave S to remain visible and protected as a piece of community-driven public art.

Who is impacted?
The mural at 103 1st Ave S was created by local residents with the intention of offering a moment of reflection and wonder for everyone who passes by. Composed entirely of natural and symbolic elements — the sun and moon, waterfall, pyramids, plants, fungi, and representations of balance between masculine and feminine energy — the artwork is meant to inspire a deeper connection with nature and self. Since its creation, community members have stopped to admire, photograph, and celebrate the mural. It has already become a meaningful visual landmark in downtown Conover.

What is at stake?
Although the artists received written permission from the property owner and maintained transparent communication with city staff throughout the process, a Notice of Violation has now been issued, threatening to force the mural’s removal. There is currently no ordinance that prohibits this type of art, yet its future is uncertain. If the mural is forced to be covered, it sets a concerning precedent that public art can be censored without legal basis — simply because there are no protections in place. This discourages creativity, suppresses cultural identity, and erodes trust between citizens and local government.

Why is now the time to act?
The City has imposed a short deadline for appeal. We must act quickly to ensure this mural — and all future works like it — are not erased. Public art enhances community pride, invites thoughtful dialogue, and transforms everyday spaces into sources of inspiration. We believe Conover deserves that.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for creative freedom, community expression, and the belief that art belongs to all of us.
