Victoria City Council adopted Morioka, Japan as a Twin City in May 1985. The Twin City relationship developed following the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr. Nitobe. Dr. Nitobe was a respected Japanese diplomat and philosopher, who died in Victoria in 1933.

To commemorate this partnership, the Mayor of Morioka at the time gifted Victoria, BC with a cherry tree which still stands in Centennial square today.

Dr. Nitobe wished to serve as a bridge across the Pacific, and it is in his spirit that the relationship is nurtured. The Twin City agreement with Morioka marked the beginning of an intensive series of visits and exchanges. This relationship has included many cultural and sporting exchanges, both official and private.

As Friends of the Centennial Sequoia working to protect the thriving tree life of Centennial Square, we extend our deep concern for any plans to cut down this magnificent cherry tree, well before it has reached its end of life.

We urge the City of Victoria to repeal its redesign plans for Centennial Square and adopt a more holistic approach to the square which respects, honours and cherishes our history and global relationships of peace and unity.
