The following was posted by Mary Fowles on Facebook:
"As you may be aware the city is planning to cut down the giant Sequoia in Centennial square as well as tamper with the design of special heritage monoliths and fountain which commemorate 100 years since the founding of the city of Victoria: Centennial Square was erected to honour the City of Victoria and to commemorate the first century of its existence (hence the name of the square being "centennial").
The city has confirmed that they are planning to kill and remove the beautiful majestic tree in the early part of 2025, with no plans to reconsider this hasty decision, despite fierce resistance that has been voiced from the voting citizens that the council has pledged to serve. Ironically, this act violates the city's own bylaws.
This is unnecessary, wasteful and destructive. The decision by council disregards for our shared and living history that has not emerged organically from, nor does it reflect the needs of the citizens.
If you haven't already done so please take a moment to sign this petition to save the tree, and share widely with your networks:

There is a second petition that is directly related to efforts to preserve the heritage design of the fountain and monoliths:

Thank you Mary for exposing this!
So there we have it, unfortunately. It looks like the City of Victoria is playing the grinch this Christmas.
Might the Whos in Greater Victoria, show them, what Christmas is all about on Christmas morning?
