Save the Merrimack College English House

The Issue

The English House at Merrimack College has become a haven for students of all majors who have a passion for reading, writing, & literature to come together to share ideas and interact away from the bustle of the larger world. It houses our two clubs: Writers' Circle and No Shelf Control, which each have a dedicated set of members. It has served as a stronghold for the humanities to flourish and given a home to those who don't find comfort anywhere else. Now, Merrimack College has decided to repurpose the English house, forcing us to pack up next week.

The English House Provides a quiet space on campus; one of the only tucked away places where students can comfortably decompress. It is not just a physical space; it is a catalyst for interpersonal growth, change, and the exchange of ideas. Having a dedicated space to simply exist away from the labours of everyday life is far more important than many people realize. Finding a place that feels like home at such a delicate time in our lives is immensely difficult, but against all odds, the English House has managed to provide that to so many. As an entity, the English House has endured plenty of hardships, battling the loss of the Writer’s House, faculty, the visiting authors program, and so many English courses over the last few semesters. Losing our only space only adds to these hardships.

Because of the immediacy of this decision, we have less than a week to act. Please help us urge the Merrimack Administration to keep the English House intact, as losing it will be detrimental to those of us who care so much about its impact and success going forward. Signing this petition shows Merrimack how important the English House is to students and stresses how imperative it is to keep it in its current state.
