The Issue

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center in Crandon Park stands as a cornerstone of our community, a symbol of education, inspiration, and the natural beauty of Biscayne Bay. For decades, it has been a sanctuary for students to learn about our marine ecosystem and a place where generations of families have connected with nature. It is not only a tribute to Marjory's tireless work in environmental preservation but also a vital resource for ecological education.

Unfortunately, this cherished center is facing unprecedented challenges from the County because of the County’s budget deficit. While the Biscayne Nature Center building was funded entirely with private donations to honor Marjory, the County wants to evict the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Nature Center and rent out the building to generate more revenue.

If we allow this to happen, we are not just losing a building; we are sacrificing a vital part of our environmental and educational heritage. The center offers programs that foster environmental stewardship, teaching young minds the significance of conservation and the beauty of biodiversity.

The County spent over $7 million in the 2024-2025 budget to build a 7,000 square foot lifeguard station for ocean rescue in the Crandon Park parking lot; and then proposed defunding lifeguards in the  Mayor's 2025-2026 budget according to the Miami Herald (linked). The County should try to rent out the new $7 mm/ 7000 sq ft lifeguard station in Crandon Park to meet their budget needs instead of evicting Marjory’s Nature Center.

We urge the Mayor and County officials and stakeholders to prioritize the protection and preservation of this invaluable center. We need to rally our community to demonstrate the value that the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center holds for us all.

In honor of Marjory's legacy and in defense of our environment and future generations, let us stand united against its closure. This center needs our collective voices to thrive and continue its mission. Marjory was a great teacher. She never just taught; she inspired. Her legacy lives, but now it needs our support more than ever.

Sign the petition to safeguard the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center and keep Marjory's vision alive for future generations.
