Save the Marion Tennis Club

The issue

We are devastated by the Marion Council's decision to demolish the Marion Tennis Club, a cherished institution that has served the Marion community for the last 90 years.

The lack of prior consultation and transparency in this decision was appalling, and the Council provided no plan to relocate the club.

Our club, while perhaps deemed "small and insignificant" by some, is anything but. We are proud members of the Glenelg Districts Tennis Association, consistently excelling in competitions and nurturing countless tennis talents over the years.

However, our significance goes beyond the court. We are a vibrant hub of social activity, providing a place for people of all ages to connect, exercise, and enjoy the camaraderie of sportsmanship. From youth programs like Tennis Australia Hot Shots to competitive tournaments and social tennis sessions, we serve thousands each year, contributing to the health and well-being of our community.

The Marion Sports and Community precinct is a massive 10Ha site with several ovals and other facilities, which houses about 8 sports at present. Tennis - one of Australia’s favourite summer passtimes - requires a tiny, tiny fraction of the 10Ha space to continue meeting the needs of the community. Rather than meet this need, the council plans to push ahead with the construction of a commercial ice skating facility on. ‘Sports’ and ‘Community’ precinct, which it will then lease to a major private profit generating company.

This not only disregards the needs of our community but also sets a dangerous precedent of prioritising profit over people. We support progress and development but not at the cost of erasing vital community organisations that have stood the test of time.

We call on the City of Marion to reconsider its plans and find the relatively modest space required for our six tennis courts within the massive Marion Sports and Community precinct. We urge all residents of Marion and Adelaide to join us in this fight to protect our heritage,  and the future of community sports.
