Save the London-to-Toronto GO Train Route: Preserving Essential Connectivity

The Issue

We, the undersigned, stand together to voice our strong support for the continuation of the London-to-Toronto GO Train route. As news of its impending cancellation circulates, we are left deeply disappointed and concerned about the consequences this decision will have on our community and the region as a whole. The London-to-Toronto GO Train route is not just a mode of transportation; it represents a vital link that connects our cities, fosters economic growth, and enhances the quality of life for residents. We urge Metrolinx and the relevant authorities to reconsider their decision and invest in the long-term sustainability of this important route.

Importance of the London-to-Toronto GO Train Route:
The London-to-Toronto GO Train service was established as a two-year pilot project to provide an alternative transportation option for Londoners commuting to downtown Toronto. Despite the longer travel time compared to driving, the route served as a lifeline for many individuals who preferred the convenience, comfort, and environmental benefits of rail travel. Additionally, it allowed residents of smaller communities like St. Marys, Stratford, Kitchener, and Guelph to access the economic opportunities and resources available in both London and Toronto.

Community Frustration and Potential:
The recent announcement of the route's discontinuation has sparked widespread frustration among commuters who feel let down by what they perceive as a failed effort. However, this setback should not discourage us from striving for improved rail connectivity. Rather, it should serve as a catalyst for renewed advocacy and engagement with decision-makers at both the provincial and federal levels.

Creating Opportunities for Progress:
The London-to-Toronto GO Train pilot project has generated valuable data regarding commuter patterns and preferences, particularly for individuals traveling between smaller centres and London. This information should not go to waste. Instead, it should be utilized to shape future transit improvements within the region. We believe that investing in faster, more frequent rail services will not only benefit London and Toronto but also strengthen connections with other communities in Southwestern Ontario.

Call to Action:
We implore Metrolinx and other relevant authorities to reconsider their decision to discontinue the London-to-Toronto GO Train route. We urge them to recognize the potential of this service in enhancing regional connectivity, promoting sustainable transportation, and fostering economic development. By preserving and improving this vital rail link, we can create a more accessible and interconnected region for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Conclusion:
The London-to-Toronto GO Train route is more than just a train service; it is an essential thread that weaves our communities together. Discontinuing this route would hinder economic growth, limit opportunities, and undermine the goal of sustainable transportation. We call upon all residents, stakeholders, and decision-makers to join us in this petition and advocate for the preservation and enhancement of the London-to-Toronto GO Train route. Together, we can ensure a brighter future for our region and its residents.

UPDATES:

July 2, 2023 - Via Rail Resumption:

We understand that Via Rail has plans to bring back trains 82-83 to service the route on a similar schedule, but they have not announced when they will do so. We cannot afford to have the route go unserviced - we demand that the GO route remain in place until fully covered by Via Rail.
