Save The Legacy Oak Of Ernest & W Claude

Save The Legacy Oak Of Ernest & W Claude
The Issue
This petition is signed by the greater community of Lake Charles to support the affected neighborhood in our efforts to save the Legacy Oak and stop the development of Pentageli Row LLC.
The Legacy Oak of Ernest & W Claude is around 100 years old. It is a home for many birds, local and migrating, and its roots sink deep into a submerged bayou offshoot of the Contraband.
The oak sits on a 2.4 acre lot, the majority of which is an essential green space & water shed for the flood proned area and safe recreation space for the many neighborhood children. The lot is surrounded on all sides by single family, single story homes.
Pentageli Row LLC’s proposed development could not be recommended by zoning board staff, was unanimously voted AGAINST by the zoning board and was met with COMPLETE neighborhood opposition.
However, the developer has appealed this decision and plans to bring the plans, unchanged, before City Council for approval.
The plans aim to
- Level a Legacy Oak and destroy neighborhood water shed and greenspace
- Add 2 nearly acres of concrete in a flood proned area
- Create a high density, multi story duplex community that will put the surrounding single story, single family neighbors under water in a heavy rain event
The neighborhood has suffered greatly in the string of extreme weather events, including Legacy Tree loss and multiple incidents of flooding. In the June 28 rain event of 6 + inches, streets flooded and the KC lot was full of standing water.
Fighting this development is important because it will set a precedent in the Mid City area, and ripple outward. Developers should be held to environmental and community standards. City Council should listen to the voices of constituents in the immediate area and greater community about future development.
Please sign and help us save this Legacy Oak!
