Kruger rhino poaching ‘kingpin’ Big Joe was arrested this week and is to stay in jail until 30 October when the magistrate decides whether or not to give him bail.

Former police officer Joseph “Big Joe” Nyalunga and his co-accused are facing more than 40 charges related to rhino poaching and racketeering dating back to 2016. Big Joe has been arrested so many times we’ve lost count. This includes murder, kidnapping, R13000 in tax evasion where he paid R1000 in bail a few weeks ago, and this week he was arrested for explosives commonly used in cash in transit crimes. 

Rhino poaching is organised crime of the highest level, fuelling many other criminal enterprises. There is no minimum sentencing for rhino poaching in South Africa, thus making it low risk and high reward.
