THE FIRST 10 000 people to sign our #RhinoLaws petition will get early access to our short film, Rhino: The Endgame, premiering TOMORROW. We want you to know that we are out there actively pushing for legislation. Please keep sharing the petition, we are in comms with the ministers, and we will get this across the line if we can show the will of the people.

THE ECONOMIST, SUSTAINABILITY WEEK AFRICA, CAPE TOWN, 25 OCTOBER 2024.

In the spotlight. Ending South Africa's rhino crisis. Speaker: JAMIE JOSEPH, Founder of SAVING THE WILD (@jamie_savingthewild on Instagram)

History was made on August 16th 2024 with the first-ever conviction of a rhino syndicate crime boss. Surprisingly, this landmark case did not occur in South Africa, which is home to approximately 80% of the world’s rhinos, but in neighbouring Mozambique.

Most rhino-poaching cases never reach trial, and penalties for rare convictions are often limited to a fine or fewer than five years’ prison time, seldom served in full. Rhino-poaching is fuelling organised crime, including weapons-trafficking, cash-in-transit heists and even crimes against humanity.

What should policymakers and law enforcement do to strengthen the fight against rhino-poaching? How can businesses and conservation groups collaborate more effectively to protect these animals? What lessons can be shared to safeguard communities and other African species?
