Save the Joseph Lukens Inn
Save the Joseph Lukens Inn
The Issue

We, the undersigned, have just recently learned of the historic significance of one of the oldest homes in Towamencin Township, built and occupied by the Joseph Lukens family by 1740. By at least 1763 the building also served as a tavern that provided food and lodging to the wagon traffic on what is now Sumneytown Pike. It may have been here that local residents first heard about the Declaration of Independence in July 1776 as the news came out of Philadelphia.
We hope that the Towamencin Township Board of Supervisors and the community at large can find a way to facilitate the preservation of this building on Sumneytown Pike across from the traffic light at Troxell Road and protect it from destruction as part of any future use of the former Freddy Hill Farms property.
The history of the Lukens Inn has been missing from Towamencin Township history for a long time. This important feature of 18th century traffic along one of our important thoroughfares and home of founding residents of the township should not be lost to meet today’s traffic developments.
We believe that the historic house and tavern building at 1442 Sumneytown Pike, Lansdale (Towamencin Township), PA should be preserved, and its preservation made an urgent priority of this America 250 year.
