Save the Ikuwai Monkeypod Tree!

Save the Ikuwai Monkeypod Tree!
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Ikuwai Way and Ikuwai Place along with concerned environmentalists, urge the City and County authorities to preserve the large monkeypod tree located on public land at 61-126 Ikuwai Place, Haleiwa, HI 96712.
This majestic tree has been a beloved feature of our community for years, providing essential shade and oxygen, enhancing the street’s aesthetic appeal, and serving as a vital ecological cornerstone. While concerns about falling branches and an impact on the water lines have been raised, we believe these issues can be addressed and solved so that no one feels they are in harm’s way and the water lines are not affected.
To gain more insight, we are requesting an independent water engineer to assess the impact of the tree on the neighborhood water lines. We also feel the tree will not be a safety concern as long as it continues to receive targeted pruning and maintenance, rather than complete removal.
Removing the tree would irreparably alter the character of our neighborhood, diminish property values, and reduce environmental benefits such as air quality improvement and wildlife habitat.
We are asking for:
• An independent arborist assessment to evaluate the tree’s health and recommend non-destructive solutions.
• An independent water engineer to assess the impact of the tree’s root system on the water lines, and if necessary suggest any available solutions to any concerns regarding the water.
• Commitment to regular maintenance to ensure safety without removal.
• Preservation of the tree as a community asset.
Letter in Support of Preserving the Ikuwai Neighborhood Monkeypod Tree
By signing below, we express our strong support for keeping this tree intact.
