Save the Humane Society so Seminole stays NO KILL
The Issue
Many saw the horrific video of an animal control officer abusing a little dog or read about it in the paper. The outrage was more than justified and the man in question has already received punishment and will hopefully be punished to the full extent of the law.
However, the outrage has now given the city an opening to terminate the contract with the humane society which operates the city shelter. What does that mean? It means the shelter would go back to being kill facility. Animals picked up would get 3 days (or whatever the city decides but 3 days is the general time allotted in most kill shelters) before being euthanized. The fate of the dogs currently at the facility is also unknown as the city may not give time to find homes before euthanizing.
This is going backwards in time instead of moving forward to better solutions. The general public doesn't know how bad it already is even WITH a wonderful no kill shelter. Dogs are being dumped inside and outside of the city daily and you can't go to Walmart without puppies being given away. Rescues who help with picking up dogs in the county would have to pick up the slack and try to help dogs picked up in the city to save them from being killed which means less resources and more dogs roaming and starving.
Shutting down the humane society because of the actions of one deranged individual is throwing out the baby with the bathwater. There are bad people everywhere, even inside good organizations. You wouldn't shut down an entire police or fire department because of the actions one individual, would you? The staff and the volunteers at the humane society work very hard and love the animals they care of.
Please sign this petition to move the city council and the city manager to NOT terminate the contract with the Humane Society and to keep the Humane Society in charge of the city shelter.
The city council meeting is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday 5/14 at which time the results of the petition will be presented.
This petition was created by an independent individual not affiliated with the Seminole Humane Society.
