The Issue

Growing up in Trussville, Alabama, the community pool was not just a place to swim; it was a cornerstone of community life, where children learned to swim, families gathered for summer, and friendships blossomed. For decades, it has served as a vital community hub, offering residents of all ages a place to connect, exercise, and unwind.

Today, this historic facility is at risk. The city has announced plans to close the pool, citing financial deficits as the primary reason. But we, the Friends of the Historical Trussville Pool, believe that this decision can and should be reconsidered.

Community pools provide immeasurable social benefits. They are known to generate revenue by attracting new residents and enhancing community life. A pool serves as a venue for events, summer camps, swimming lessons, and local swim teams, which not only cover operational costs but also promote health, safety, and wellbeing for our community.

Statistics show that communities with access to swimming facilities see a reduction in youth drowning incidents and an increase in community cohesion and property values. Furthermore, many cities have successfully maintained their pools by exploring diverse funding avenues such as public-private partnerships, crowdfunding, increased community engagement in programming, and applying for grants dedicated to preserving community resources.

Demolition is an irreversible option that eliminates the potential for economic and social gains. Once our beloved pool is gone, so too is the opportunity to reverse financial deficits through creative and community-driven solutions.

We urge the Trussville city council to consider alternative financial offsets like increased community programming or partnerships with local businesses which have successfully kept similar community staples afloat in times of economic hardship. By investing in our pool, we invest in our community.

Please sign this petition to show your support for keeping the Trussville community pool open and explore sustainable options that bridge financial gaps without sacrificing a piece of our history and community spirit.

“Thank you to everyone who has shared your love for the Trussville community pool. I want to provide some clarity on where things stand. The decision regarding the pool's closure was not made by the City Council — this has been administered through the Mayor's office. I'm hopeful that once we see those plans, the Council will have the opportunity to vote on something that can genuinely benefit our community. Before anything moves forward, I want to see an actual plan on the table. I'd encourage residents who want more immediate answers or details to reach out to the Mayor's office directly, since this decision falls under their administration. — Kimberly Farr, Trussville City Council, Place”

“Thank you to everyone who has signed the petition and spoken up about the Trussville Community Pool. I know this is about more than just a pool for a lot of people. It is about memories, families, and having a place in our community where people can spend time together. As a City Council member, I do not have the authority to reopen the pool on my own. What I can do is listen, ask questions, and make sure your concerns are part of the discussion when decisions about funding and the future of the pool come before the Council. I also do not believe we should judge the pool only by whether it makes money. We have a lot of city services and recreation programs that are not expected to pay for themselves. We fund them because they serve the community. I think the pool deserves to be looked at the same way. That does not mean we should ignore the condition of the pool, safety issues, or the cost of repairing and operating it. Those things matter, too. I want us to have good information in front of us so we can make a responsible decision. At this point, I think the biggest question is what comes next. If the old pool can be repaired in a reasonable way, we should know what that would cost. If it cannot, then I think we should be talking about what a future community pool could look like and what it would take to make that happen. Let me be clear with my neighbors. Scripture reminds us to look at the fruit because that is one of the best ways to know what is really in a person's heart. It also reminds us that where we put our treasure says a lot about what we value. The same is true for a city budget. If we are serious about responsibly replacing the community pool, then I believe that commitment should show up in next year's budget. I also want to say how proud I am to see my neighbors standing up for something they believe in. Our form of government only works when people are informed, involved, and willing to make their voices heard. You do not have to agree with me or with each other on every issue, but I will always respect people who care enough about their community to show up and take a stand. That is why the upcoming budget process matters so much. Supporters of the pool should reach out to each member of the City Council before we begin the budget process in September. If you believe a community pool should remain part of Trussville's future, now is the time to make sure your elected officials know it. Please keep speaking up. The petition matters. Emails matter. Conversations matter. I would also encourage you to come to City Council meetings and speak during public comment. Showing up in person helps make sure your concerns are heard directly. I cannot promise what the final answer will be, but I can promise that I will keep listening, keep asking questions, and keep looking for a responsible path forward.
