Supporter Spotlight on Artist Dawn Frasier of Sophista-Tiki!
The Mai-Kai is a special place for people from coast to coast and Miss Dawn is a resident of the Pacific Northwest. She is an influential artist who has been part of the tiki revival since the ’90s. She is known for the beautiful works of art and aloha wear creates from her home studio. When I contacted Dawn and asked her if I could share her thoughts on the Mai-Kai she was happy to oblige. Dawn shared these thoughts with me…
“I've been in the tiki revival from the get-go when it was all about urban archeology, thrifting scores, and the art. In my urban archaeology expeditions, I was able to visit many of the legendary spots before they eventually closed down or were torn down. I'd hate to see this happen to the Mai Kai, it’s one of a kind. The further we get into this century the more valuable intact places and things from the last century become extinct. This includes the Mai Kai- our precariously remaining tiki mecca.
The Hukilau has prompted the cross-country trip from Seattle numerous times. Love it when a whole Seattle contingency makes it. (cause we all know each other am I right!) I'm notorious for wandering away from my group and getting lost in the Mai Kai. I've done it so many times there’s a plan in place, and I have a designated wrangler to keep track of me. LOL. I have a hard time just sitting in the bar bullshitting, I want to check out every nook and cranny. So, after a round of Jet Pilots and cheese tangs, I’m off to see what I can see and take my nerdy reference photos for art.
I'd be bummed if I never got to go again even though the humidity zaps me and after a 4-day party I'm spent. Still, if given the opportunity I'd do it in a heartbeat all over again. While all of the tiki universe waits to see what’s going to happen next I’m here in my studio at the Bamboo Grove of Westwood masterminding my own version of tiki modern. I'm designing new fabrics, creating new lines for Sophista-tiki Togs and Castaway Cravats. Releasing new limited-edition prints, and envisioning PanExotica77. I will continue to hone my lifelong discipline of Moodxotica and up my game in my DAWNCRAFT decor lines. For all the eye candy check out my IG @#dawnfrasierartistofficial.
