The Issue

Georgia State University is proposing to demolish the historic Georgia Railway & Power Co. Substation building at 148 Edgewood Avenue and replace it with a surface parking lot.

Although the building is a contributing structure in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Landmark District, Georgia State University and the Board of Regents have “sovereign immunity” over the City of Atlanta’s zoning ordinances that would otherwise protect the building from needless demolition.

Georgia’s state historic preservation office has determined the building is individually eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and declared that demolishing the building will have a “significant impact on historic properties.”

In order to comply with state law, if at least 100 residents request a public hearing GSU must hold one before proceeding with demolition.

Emails can be sent to directly to cemalec@terracon.com. A copy of this petition along with all signatures will also be sent expressing public requests for a public hearing.
