Charlotte, NC, often hailed for its rapid growth and modern skyline, risks losing an invaluable piece of its history. Many have witnessed, with a heavy heart, our city slowly erase its architectural past, brick by brick. With every shiny new structure, we seem to forget the stories and craftsmanship of those that came before. Our past is slipping away, and with it, our unique character.

Built in 1927, the Builders Building was created as a showcase for Charlotte's construction industry and brought together architects, contractors, builders, and manufacturers during Charlotte's early 20th-century growth. It was locally designated as a historic landmark in 2004.

Preserving the Builders Building isn't just about saving four walls and a roof it's about safeguarding our shared history. Historic buildings offer a tangible connection to our past, enriching our community and drawing visitors eager to learn about our city's roots. Cities worldwide have shown that historical preservation and modern development can coexist, often enriching both. 

We ask First Presbyterian Church (current owners), the City of Charlotte, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) to collaborate with local preservationists, architects, and developers to explore creative adaptive-reuse strategies for the Builders Building.

Adaptive reuse can allow Charlotte to honor its past while supporting economic growth and a vibrant, evolving Uptown. It also gives us an opportunity to preserve the embodied energy and materials already contained within the building rather than demolishing a historic structure and starting over.
